Aboriginal Supported Child Development Support Worker

The Métis Community Services Society of BC (MCSBC) has a mandate from the Métis citizens to provide integrated, holistic, family centered, wraparound services to all those who need assistance, with special emphasis on Aboriginal populations, specifically Métis populations. We are responsible for the development and implementation of a full complement of child services from preventative to Child Protection, via a unique relationship with MCFD social workers working closely with the team and management.

MCSBC is currently seeking a full time Aboriginal Supported Child Development Support Worker. The Aboriginal Supported Child Development Support Worker will work in partnership with Aboriginal families and our early childhood department to provide additional support to designated child/children to ensure inclusion in childcare programs; preschool, daycare, and school age care. In collaboration with parents, childcare facilities staff, Supported child development consultant and team members assist in developing an individual service plan identifying goals and strategies to support child/children’s developmental needs.

Position Summary
The position will be based out of (community), working in childcare settings with a specific focus of providing ASCD services to Aboriginal families with children who require extra supports.

Support Worker requires expertise related to:
• Strategies and appropriate interventions for supporting families with special needs children;
• Knowledge of developmental delays and disabilities including FASD and Autism ;
• Training and experience in assessment processes;
• Supporting children one on one in a childcare setting
• Working with other community professionals and early intervention services;
• Facilitating community based events and workshops with the Supported Child Development Consultant

• Early Childhood Development Certificate/Diploma and Special Needs Certificate, or relevant degree or experience
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in working with children and families, preferable experience in working in Aboriginal communities
• Experience working in a daycare, preschool, headstart, afterschool program. Must be comfortable participating in group activities, circle times and leading activities
• Must demonstrate the knowledge of typical and atypical child development, family centered practice, early intervention, and community-based programs
• Must be a mature individual who demonstrates initiative, effective interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and in partnership with other programs and resources in the community
• Must be able to work independently, be reliable and self-motivated under the direction of the consultant ;
• Must have ability to maintain case records
• Must maintain confidentiality and professional standards
• Must have strong computer literacy
• Possess reliable transportation and hold valid B.C. driver‘s license
• Must comply with the Criminal Records Review Act
• Knowledge of Metis culture and knowledge
• Knowledge of the School Systems an asset
