The Bus Driver is responsible for transporting passengers over specified routes to local or distant locations following set time schedules.


Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards and procedures, and as directed by the Principal of Sensisyusten School.
Operate the school bus in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures
Safely drive students to and from school, following a prescribed route, on a daily basis, with consistent pick up/drop times, as well as any scheduled school field trips
Transports passengers that are involved in other community programs during non-school times, which include, but not limited to Spring Break, Winter Break, July/August months
Perform daily safety and maintenance checks. Document and report any maintenance concerns to the Principal of Sensisyusten School.
Maintain a clean, presentable bus, including full interior/exterior washes as needed
Ensure bus is safely and securely stored
Drives defensively under varying conditions and accordance with applicable laws
Enforces bus safety rules and regulations.
Maintains order and proper discipline of students; resolving disputes, documents and reports severe disciplinary cases.
Services the bus with gas (within employment hours as contracted)
Assures bus is maintained in a safe and clean operating condition.
Sustain a scheduled routine maintenance of the bus (oil changes, tire rotation/replacement/change over
Ensures children’s safety when boarding and leaving the bus and crossing street while the bus is stopped.
Directs students during emergency evacuation procedures and have a working knowledge of the proper application of first aid practices and procedures
Perform bus evacuation drills annually with students and staff
Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections
Reports personal absences in time for supervisor to secure a substitute driver.
Maintains effective work relationships with all school staff, students and parents contacted in the performance of duties.
Attends meetings, programs, and in-service training as assigned
Maintains current required licenses and certificates
Maintain an appearance appropriate to the position.
Performs all duties and responsibilities in an appropriate and personal manner as prescribed by the Ministry of Transportation and as required by Westbank First Nation (appearance, language, gestures, tobacco, drugs and alcohol etc).
Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Principal of Sensisyusten School.



Provincial Grade 12 or Equivalent preferred
Valid BC Class 1 or 2 Driver’s License with air endorsements
Valid First Aid Certification with CPR Level B or C endorsement
Prefer Conflict Resolution / Stress Management Certificate

2 – 3 years’ experience driving a School Bus preferred
2 – 3 years’ experience in the light maintenance of a School Bus preferred

Must possess extensive knowledge of traffic rules and regulations, school bus operation requirements, and National Safety Code Standards
Sensitive to the interrelationship of passengers, parents and caregivers
Good communication skills
Excellent interpersonal and people skills
Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and vulnerable Sector Search
Lifestyle consistent with the importance and responsibilities of the position
Demonstrated integrity
Strong understanding of the maintenance requirements of a Bus
Ability to work flexible hours and with limited supervision
Demonstrated ability to maintain discipline with school aged children while maintaining composure and control
Ability to deal with emergency situations
Working Conditions

Physical Demands
The School Bus Driver has a moderately strenuous job. The Driver must sit for long periods and requires intense concentration, particularly in poor driving conditions.
Environmental Conditions
The School Bus Driver must work in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.
Sensory Demands
The School Bus Driver requires intense concentration.
Mental Demands
The School Bus Driver must maintain order and discipline on the bus while driving in a safe and appropriate manner. Stress can be caused by the need to address behavior issues and discipline problems.
