Unit 5.5 Challenges with toddlers

Toddlers can also be challenging to work with. You may encounter any or all of the following:

  • Negativism
  • Possessiveness
  • Rigid adherence to routines
  • Temper tantrums

As a toddler grows and develops new skills, their need to feel competent and to have some control over their life grows stronger. This streak of independence and negativism is a normal part of development and is not a reflection on parenting or caregiving abilities. Each child will display these behaviours at different ages, although the typical ages are between 18 months and 3 years. The intensity and duration of this phase will also vary from child to child.
